Resolution in favor of Temporary Waiver of TRIPS Restrictions on COVID Vaccines

The following resolution was adopted at our General Meeting on February 24, 2021

WHEREAS so many people in the US and abroad need a higher pace of vaccine production, and

WHEREAS lower GDP countries cannot afford to pay monopoly rates for COVID-19 vaccines, and

WHEREAS 100 countries have called for a temporary waiver at the WTO of “Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights” (TRIPS) on technology needed to produce more COVID-19 vaccines and medications, and

WHEREAS under former President Trump the US blocked the TRIPS waiver insisting that pharmaceutical industry profits come before ending the COVID crisis;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the members of the 31st Legislative District Democrats of Washington State, encourage the Biden administration to reverse course on the US blocking the waiver, and

BE IT RESOLVED that we will join the hundreds of other organizations in signing the organizational sign on letter put forward by the Washington Fair Trade Coalition asking the Biden administration to let the waiver go through.
